Bank API and Payment Gateway Integration in Kenya: IPN, Jenga, Buni and Pesapal
Bank transfers and card payments are still matched by hand in many finance teams. Here is how bank and gateway integrations work in Kenya.
Why finance teams still match by hand
A customer pays into a bank account and sends a screenshot. Someone checks the statement, finds the line and updates the system. Multiply that by hundreds of payments and mistakes follow. Bank API integration lets the bank tell your system about each payment.
Notifications, statements and APIs
Banks offer different options: instant payment notifications to your server, statement files or feeds, and APIs for payments and payouts. Examples in Kenya include Equity Jenga, KCB Buni and notification services from banks such as Co-operative Bank and I&M Bank. What you can use depends on your account and the bank's onboarding process.
Cards and mobile payment links
Payment gateways such as Pesapal add card and mobile payment options at checkout or by payment link. This helps customers who prefer cards or who are abroad, such as diaspora parents paying school fees.
Matching payments
Matching relies on a reference: a virtual account number, an invoice number or a student or member ID. Payments with missing or wrong references should land in a review queue, not vanish. Duplicate checks and verified callbacks protect against errors and fraud.
Questions finance teams ask
How long does bank onboarding take? It depends on the bank and your documents. We help prepare requests, but the bank sets the timeline.
Can we pay salaries through the system? Where the bank supports bulk payment files or APIs, we can prepare them for approval.
Is it safe to expose a callback URL? Yes if it uses HTTPS and verifies each callback before acting on it.
Mistakes to avoid
Matching on amount alone, which fails when two customers pay the same amount. Having no review queue for unmatched payments. Skipping callback verification. Not planning for bank downtime. Mixing test and live credentials.
Banks and gateways across the region
Banks in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana and elsewhere offer their own APIs and notifications, and gateways operate across several countries. The integration approach is similar, with differences in authentication, formats and onboarding. Tell us your bank and country and we will check what is available.
Payouts
Where the bank supports it, bulk payment files or APIs can prepare supplier and payroll payments. A person should still approve before money moves.
