n8n Automation in Kenya: Self-Hosted Workflows for WhatsApp, M-Pesa and Odoo
n8n connects your apps with visual workflows, and self-hosting keeps your data on your own server. Here is what it can do for a business in Kenya.
What n8n is
n8n is a workflow automation platform. Instead of writing code for every connection, you build workflows visually: a trigger, such as a form submission or payment callback, followed by actions across apps and APIs. Because it can call any API, it suits local services that global automation tools do not cover well.
Why self-host it
n8n can run on your own server. That keeps workflow data and credentials under your control and avoids per-task pricing, though you pay for the server and someone must maintain it. We install n8n on a VPS with HTTPS, authentication, backups and updates, and build the workflows through our n8n workflow automation service.
Workflows that suit East African businesses
Typical examples: send a WhatsApp message when an order changes status; record an M-Pesa payment callback against an invoice; create a CRM lead from a website form or a Meta lead ad; push a new Odoo or ERPNext record into another tool; send a morning sales summary to the manager. Each saves a few minutes many times a week.
Where AI fits
AI steps can classify incoming messages, summarise long text or draft a reply. They work best with a person reviewing the output before anything goes to a customer.
n8n compared with other automation tools
Hosted tools such as Zapier or Make are quick to start and charge by usage. n8n can be self-hosted, which suits businesses that want control of data and predictable costs, and it can call any API with an HTTP request. The trade-off is that someone has to host and maintain it.
The right choice depends on volume, privacy needs and who will maintain it. For one or two simple automations, a hosted tool may be fine, and we will say so.
Questions we hear
Is n8n free? The software can be self-hosted, subject to its licence terms. You pay for the server and the work to build and maintain workflows. Check n8n's current licence if you plan to use it commercially in a particular way.
Can it send WhatsApp messages? Through the WhatsApp Business Platform or a provider, subject to Meta's rules.
Does it work with our ERP? Yes, including Odoo and ERPNext.
Using n8n across East Africa and Ghana
Because n8n connects to any API, it can bridge global tools and local services: M-Pesa Daraja in Kenya, other mobile money APIs in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ghana, bank notifications and tax invoicing systems. The availability and rules of each API differ by country, so we review them during planning.
Reliability
A workflow that fails silently is worse than none. Error workflows, alerts to a named person and logs make failures visible. Version copies of workflows allow recovery, and upgrades should be tested.
