How to Set Up a VPS for Your Business: A Practical Security Checklist
A VPS gives you control, and with it responsibility. Here is a practical checklist for setting one up securely for Odoo, ERPNext, a website or n8n.
Why a VPS
Shared hosting is cheap but limited. Systems such as Odoo, ERPNext or n8n, and busy custom applications, need their own resources and configuration. A VPS gives you that. Our VPS setup and configuration service covers the steps below.
Choose provider and size
Pick a reputable provider with a region close to your users and a size that matches your application and number of users. Keep the account in your company's name.
Lock down access
Use SSH keys, disable password and root login, create named admin users and enable a firewall that opens only the ports you need. Add protection against repeated login attempts.
Run applications in containers behind Nginx
Docker and Docker Compose make applications portable and easier to update. Nginx as a reverse proxy routes each domain to the right container and handles HTTPS with automatically renewed certificates.
Backups you have tested
Schedule database and file backups to separate storage, and test restoring them. A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a plan.
Questions we hear
Can I set up a VPS myself? Yes, if you are comfortable with Linux. The risk is skipping security steps, and the cost of a mistake can be high.
How much does a VPS cost? It depends on the provider and size, from small monthly amounts for light use upward.
Which operating system? Ubuntu LTS or Debian are common, well-supported choices.
Common mistakes
Leaving password login on. Running everything as root. Opening database ports to the internet. No backups, or backups on the same server. Forgetting certificate renewal. Not recording what was installed. A checklist and documentation avoid most of this.
Hosting location and latency
Choose a region close to your users. For East African customers, a European or Middle Eastern region often gives good latency, and some providers have African regions. Test from your users' networks before committing. Data protection rules in your country may affect where personal data should be stored.
Updates and monitoring
Apply security updates regularly and watch disk, memory, CPU, services and certificate expiry with alerts. If nobody on your team can do this, a server management arrangement fills the gap.
